Islamabad: WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new centralised contacts interface for iPhone users that will allow them to easily see which contacts are currently online and who was recently active on the platform.

According to reports by WABetaInfo, references to the new feature were discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta version for iOS. The update suggests that the messaging platform is working on a dedicated “Contacts” hub aimed at improving how users manage and monitor their contacts’ activity.

The development follows an earlier report in March, which revealed that WhatsApp had introduced a beta update for Android users enabling them to view which contacts were currently active on the app without needing to open individual chats.

Currently, users who keep their online status visible must still open each conversation separately to check whether a contact is online or to view their “last seen” status. The new feature is expected to simplify this process through a single interface.

According to the report, the upcoming Contacts section will appear within WhatsApp settings, directly below the user’s profile photo. The section is expected to display up to four favourite contacts, while contacts currently online will appear at the top of the list with a green indicator on their profile picture. Recently active contacts will reportedly be shown below in chronological order.

The feature is also expected to include a search bar for quickly finding contacts, along with options to manually add phone numbers or scan QR codes to save new contacts. Users may also be able to manage and update their favourite contacts from the same section and sort the contact list alphabetically instead of by activity status.

Although the feature is not yet officially available to beta testers, reports suggest that it has already been activated internally, indicating that broader testing could begin in future updates.
