Dr Asma’s Body Reaches Spantik Base Camp

Islamabad: The recovery mission for Pakistani climber Dr Asma Mushtaq has reached a key stage, with volunteers successfully bringing her body down to Spantik Peak Base Camp after a challenging operation in the Karakoram.

Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said the Arandu Volunteer Rescue Team had safely transported the body to the base camp, from where arrangements are now being made for its evacuation to Skardu.

In a post on X, Tarar said the body would be airlifted from Spantik Base Camp to Skardu as soon as a suitable flight becomes available. From Skardu, it will be transported to Lahore, he added.

“Further updates will be shared accordingly,” the minister said.

Dr Asma died on August 20 after suffering a serious high-altitude medical emergency while descending from Spantik Mountain, which rises 7,027 metres above sea level in the Karakoram range.

Her body was recovered two days ago, but bringing it safely to the base camp proved difficult because of severe weather and the demanding conditions at high altitude.

The latest development marks a major step in the prolonged recovery effort, with the focus now shifting to arranging her onward journey from the remote mountain base to her home in Lahore.
