Asim Munir’s Iran Visit Signals Diplomatic Breakthrough
News Desk
Islamabad: The The New York Times has reported that the United States and Iran are moving closer to a possible agreement, with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Syed Asim Munir, said to have played a significant diplomatic role in facilitating the process.
According to the report, Field Marshal Asim Munir’s recent visit to Iran was part of high-level diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and helping advance negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Despite reported progress, major differences reportedly remain unresolved, particularly regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment programme.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that Field Marshal Asim Munir returned to Pakistan after completing what it described as a “short but highly productive” official visit to Iran.
According to the ISPR statement, the visit was aimed at easing regional tensions and promoting constructive engagement following the April 8 ceasefire.

During the visit, the army chief held meetings with senior Iranian leaders, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.
The discussions focused on accelerating consultations aimed at achieving long-term peace, regional stability, and a final understanding between the concerned parties. According to ISPR, the meetings were held in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and contributed meaningfully to ongoing mediation efforts.
The military’s media wing further stated that encouraging progress was achieved during extensive talks held over a 24-hour period, while the Iranian leadership appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in facilitating dialogue and supporting a peaceful resolution to regional disputes.
Separately, Marco Rubio said that some progress had been made in negotiations with Iran and hinted that an announcement could be made within days. He added that there was hope Iran would accept an agreement aimed at ending the conflict.
Arab media outlets also claimed that during his meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed reservations about the United States, stating that the Iranian people do not trust America due to repeated violations of past commitments.
However, he reportedly reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to negotiations and strengthening ties with “brotherly countries” such as Pakistan.
