Half of the World’s Youth Struggle with Mental Health: Study

Islamabad: A new global research report has raised alarm over the deteriorating mental health of younger generations, identifying key lifestyle and social factors behind the growing crisis.

According to the Global Mind Health Report released by Sapien Labs, nearly half of young people worldwide are experiencing mental health problems.

The study attributes this trend primarily to early smartphone use, increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, and weakening social connections.

The large-scale international study analyzed data from more than 2.5 million individuals across 85 countries, offering one of the most comprehensive insights into global mental wellbeing trends.

Researchers also found a striking pattern: youth mental health tends to be worse in wealthier countries. The report highlighted behavioral trends such as frequent smartphone use before bedtime, particularly among women, as a contributing factor to declining mental wellbeing.

To assess mental health, scientists used a metric known as the Mind Health Quotient, which evaluates an individual’s ability to manage stress, regulate emotions, and function effectively in daily life.

The findings revealed that almost half of individuals under the age of 35 are facing mental health challenges, underscoring the scale of the issue.

Experts behind the report emphasised that the combination of digital overexposure, poor diet, and reduced real-world social interaction is playing a significant role in shaping the mental health outcomes of younger generations, calling for urgent attention to these factors.
