Flood Threat Looms As More Rains Hit Pakistan

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of possible urban flooding and increased river flows as monsoon rains are expected to continue in several parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Azad Kashmir and Sindh.

The warning was issued during the 11th meeting of the Emergency Response Committee held at the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), chaired by Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal.

Officials reviewed the ongoing monsoon situation, river conditions and preparations to respond to potential flood emergencies. The meeting was attended by federal ministers, NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik and representatives of relevant departments through a video link.

The committee was informed that heavy rainfall in northern and upper regions during August could lead to a significant rise in water levels in rivers and streams, increasing the risk of flash floods, urban flooding and overflow of mountain torrents.

NDMA officials also briefed participants about Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to the NEOC, where he appreciated the role of modern early warning systems and technology-driven disaster management measures.

The NDMA has advised citizens to remain cautious during heavy rainfall and avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas to prevent accidents and ensure safety.
