Shehbaz says US-Iran peace deal near final stage
News Desk
Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced that a final decision had been reached on a possible peace agreement between the United States and Iran, signaling a major diplomatic breakthrough in efforts to end months of escalating tensions between the two countries.
In a statement posted on X, the prime minister said Pakistan was actively working with all parties to finalize the next steps of the proposed agreement, which is expected to be signed soon.
“The US-Iran talks have never been this close to peace,” Shehbaz Sharif said, while also warning that attempts by certain elements to sabotage the process would fail.
The premier tagged key international figures in his post, including US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US envoy Steve Witkoff, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, underscoring the high-level diplomatic engagement surrounding the negotiations.
Sources said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to travel to Geneva, Switzerland, on Saturday along with a high-level delegation to attend the possible signing ceremony of the agreement.

The development comes amid intensified diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan, which has emerged as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran following months of regional instability and conflict that began on February 28.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” had entered its final stage. In a statement on X, he urged the media to avoid speculation until the agreement was formally completed, promising that all details would be released under a transparent policy.
Araqchi’s statement was later shared by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social, fueling further speculation that a breakthrough announcement may be imminent.
Iranian media outlets have already published details of a reported 14-point draft agreement, describing it as the outcome of extensive back-channel diplomacy between Tehran and Washington.
According to Mehr News Agency, the proposed framework includes key provisions related to sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets, restoration of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, and reconstruction assistance for Iran.
However, Iranian officials have cautioned that the draft is still subject to approval by relevant state institutions before it can be formally adopted.
Pakistan’s role in the negotiations has drawn international attention in recent months. Islamabad previously facilitated a ceasefire between the US and Iran in April 2026 and hosted several rounds of direct and indirect negotiations under the banner of the “Islamabad Talks.”
