London waste-facility fire disrupts rail services

London: A major fire at a waste facility in northwest London has caused widespread transport disruption, with more than 100 firefighters battling the blaze near Wembley Stadium.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said around 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines were deployed after receiving reports of a fire at an industrial estate on Hannah Close in Neasden at about 11:30 BST on Friday.

The blaze, located less than a mile from Wembley Stadium, generated thick columns of dark smoke that could be seen from several miles away, including parts of central London.

Fire officials said the affected industrial complex measures approximately 100 by 150 metres. More than 70 calls were received about the incident, while the cause of the fire remains unknown.

The emergency has also disrupted rail and underground services across northwest London. Transport for London suspended the entire Metropolitan line, while services on the Jubilee line were partially suspended between Willesden Green and Wembley Park.

National Rail services to and from London Marylebone were also affected by delays and cancellations after railway lines towards Aylesbury were blocked.

Authorities said an Amazon delivery centre located in the same industrial park was not directly affected, but its workers were evacuated as a precaution.

Firefighters continued efforts to bring the blaze under control as emergency services urged residents in surrounding areas to remain indoors because of the heavy smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
