Despite US Pressure, President Zardari Stresses Strong Ties with Iran

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has underscored the importance of enhancing trade and economic ties between Pakistan and Iran for mutual benefit.

His statement comes at a crucial time, especially in light of recent opposition from the United States towards the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project, accompanied by warnings of potential sanctions.

Zardari highlighted the considerable potential for broadening bilateral economic cooperation across various sectors between Pakistan and Iran.

These sentiments were expressed during a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Raza Amiri Mughdam, held at the President’s House.

According to reports from the foreign news agency “Reuters,” on March 26, the United States reiterated its opposition to the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project and cautioned against engaging in business activities with Iran, hinting at the possibility of sanctions.

In a statement issued by the President’s House, Zardari reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran, emphasizing the necessity of collaborative efforts to address common challenges.

The Iranian ambassador stressed the importance of augmenting trade volume and enhancing cooperation within the banking sector.

He also proposed expanding air and trade links, citing the potential benefits for Pakistan from the Chabahar-Zahedan railway, particularly in facilitating trade with Central Asia and Europe.

President’s Meeting with Palestinian Ambassador

Later, President Asif Zardari met with the Ambassador of Palestine to Pakistan, Ahmed Jawad Rabi, who extended his congratulations on the President’s assumption of office.

During their discussion, the Palestinian ambassador highlighted the atrocities and acts of terrorism perpetrated by Israeli forces against innocent Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In response, President Zardari commended the courage and resilience of the Palestinian people in their prolonged struggle against Israeli occupation.

He also pledged Pakistan’s continued support and announced additional aid to assist the Palestinians in their time of need.

Jawad Rabi expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s ongoing support, particularly in the field of education.

He noted that more than 50,000 Palestinians have graduated from Pakistani educational institutions, emphasizing the significance of this educational assistance in empowering Palestinian youth and contributing to their development.
