Islamabad: Pakistani singer Sajjad Ali is at the centre of an online debate after one of his popular songs was performed on an Indian television singing competition, prompting social media users to question whether he will respond to the use of his work.

The discussion began after a contestant on the Indian music reality show Punjab Master Champs performed Sajjad Ali’s hit song “Ravi.”

In the same programme, another contestant sang “Meri Zindagi Hai Tu” by Pakistani singer Asim Azhar.

The performances have triggered debate on social media over the use of Pakistani music on foreign television programmes and whether the songs were performed with the necessary permissions.

Many users drew comparisons with Sajjad Ali’s earlier decision to withhold permission for his songs to be performed on a major Pakistani singing competition. At the time, his stance drew mixed reactions, with some supporting his right as a copyright holder while others criticised the move.

Following the Indian television performance, social media users questioned whether the singer would take a similar position. Some asked whether he would object to his song being performed on an Indian show, while others wondered whether permission had been obtained beforehand.

So far, Sajjad Ali has not issued any official statement regarding the performances, and it remains unclear whether he intends to make a public comment or pursue any legal action.

Sajjad Ali is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most celebrated musicians, with a career spanning more than four decades. His distinctive style and timeless songs have earned him a loyal fan base both in Pakistan and internationally.
