Sindh Prisons Hold 27,000 Inmates Against Capacity of 14,000

Karachi: Jails across Sindh province are facing severe overcrowding, with prisoner numbers far exceeding their official capacity, according to official documents.
The total capacity of prisons in Sindh is around 14,000 inmates, while the current prison population has surged to approximately 27,000, nearly double the available space.
The situation is particularly alarming in major jails.
In Karachi Central Jail, designed to hold 2,400 prisoners, nearly 8,000 inmates are currently housed. Similarly, Malir Jail, with a capacity of 2,200, is accommodating around 5,500 prisoners.
According to documents obtained by Geo News, all 23 jails in the province are now overcrowded, raising serious concerns about prison conditions and inmate welfare.
Hyderabad Central Jail, built for 1,500 prisoners, is currently housing around 3,000 inmates. Larkana Central Jail, designed for 650 prisoners, holds about 1,000 inmates, while Thatta Jail, with a capacity of 250, is accommodating nearly 950 prisoners.
The province also has three women’s prisons located in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur, where the number of female inmates has reached 438. However, only 68 of them have been convicted.
Out of the total 27,000 prisoners in Sindh, approximately 22,600 are under trial, while only around 3,500 have been convicted. Additionally, 459 inmates are on death row, awaiting the final outcome of their cases.Additionally, 459 inmates are on death row, awaiting the final outcome of their cases.
