Washington: US President Donald Trump has said he believes a deal with Iran could be reached within the next week, according to an interview with ABC News.

Trump stated that under the expected agreement, a ceasefire would be extended and the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened for international shipping. He added that ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran are progressing rapidly.

The US president further said he has no objection to Iran’s decision to suspend communications, adding that such a move does not indicate that Washington will resume military operations.

Earlier statements from Trump also suggested optimism about the talks, noting that diplomatic discussions with Tehran were moving forward at a fast pace.

Meanwhile, US Senator Bernie Sanders has strongly criticized Trump’s remarks regarding the Iran negotiations. Sanders said the president appeared unconcerned about the potential failure of the talks and warned of serious consequences if tensions escalate.

He said that any military conflict could endanger the lives of soldiers and potentially lead to higher fuel prices. Sanders added that rising energy costs would impact millions of people and stressed that the US president should take these risks seriously.
