Samson Leads CSK Charge as Early Wickets Keep KKR in Contest

Chennai: A high-tempo start from Sanju Samson powered Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, but timely strikes ensured the visitors stayed in the hunt during the early stages at Chepauk.
After being put in to bat, CSK raced out of the blocks, with Samson immediately asserting dominance against the new ball. Facing Vaibhav Arora in the opening over, Samson showcased his form with a series of aggressive strokes, capitalizing on anything short and building early momentum.
KKR, boosted by the return of Varun Chakravarthy, had opted to chase, anticipating dew later in the evening, but their bowlers struggled initially to contain CSK’s top order.
However, the first breakthrough came against the run of play when Anukul Roy removed Ruturaj Gaikwad for a quick 7, as the CSK captain mistimed a shot to deep midwicket. Despite the early setback, CSK maintained their aggressive approach.
Youngster Ayush Mhatre then joined Samson to keep the scoring rate high, taking advantage of inconsistent lines from the KKR pacers. Cameron Green, who shared the new ball, showed some early promise with movement but was punished for his field placements, conceding boundaries and two sixes in a costly spell.

CSK surged to 52 for 1 in just four overs, putting KKR under immediate pressure.
Mhatre continued his attacking display, racing to 38 off just 17 balls, but Arora managed to redeem himself after a difficult start. Mixing his lengths effectively, he deceived Mhatre with a sharp bouncer that resulted in a top edge to deep midwicket, providing KKR with a crucial second wicket.
At the end of the powerplay, CSK stood at a commanding 72 for 2.
Despite the wickets, the hosts maintained control, with Samson anchoring the innings while Dewald Brevis added flair at the other end. Brevis capped off a cautious over from Sunil Narine with a powerful strike over long-on, underlining the batting-friendly nature of the pitch.
By the seventh over, CSK had advanced to 81 for 2, setting a strong platform. However, with KKR striking at key moments, the contest remained finely balanced as the match progressed.
