Record Year: 61,000 Heart Patients Examined at PIC

Peshawar: Over 61,000 heart patients, including 9,000 children, were examined in the Out-Patient Department (OPD) of the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) during the year 2023.

Rifat Anjum, spokesperson for the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC), unveiled staggering figures during a press briefing regarding the institution’s activities in 2023. Over 61,000 individuals, including 9,000 children, sought cardiac consultations in the Out-Patient Department (OPD), Anjum said.

Anjum highlighted that the PIC conducted a substantial number of critical procedures, with more than 1,400 patients undergoing cardiac surgeries and 11,000 receiving angiography and angioplasty services, including 450 children.

Notably, 13,000 individuals were admitted to the emergency ward for heart-related concerns, while over 15,600 underwent various cardiac treatments, including angiography, angioplasty, and surgical interventions, availing benefits through health cards.

Remarkably, the institution performed 21 transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) surgeries, a groundbreaking feat executed without chest surgery, meeting international standards.

Anjum emphasized the PIC’s dedication to providing top-notch healthcare, extending its services not only to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and neighboring provinces but also to Afghanistan. Over 4,000 Afghan patients received care in the OPD, with 600 undergoing angiography, angioplasty, and heart surgeries.

Furthermore, approximately 28,400 patients benefited from the PIC’s cutting-edge diagnostic facilities, including CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, and X-rays.

Highlighting the institution’s achievements, Anjum proudly announced the PIC’s re-certification from ISO as a first-category government hospital in the province. Additionally, she noted pioneering advancements such as the introduction of Rota Pro Plus and LA appendage technology, marking a significant milestone in addressing heart diseases within Pakistan.
