Punjab orders fire safety audits at public hospitals

Rawalpindi: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered province-wide emergency safety audits of public-sector hospitals, with authorities given strict deadlines to identify fire hazards and strengthen emergency preparedness.

Under the directives, Deputy Commissioners will immediately inspect the availability and condition of fire extinguishers, firefighting equipment and emergency exits at public hospitals and other government facilities in coordination with Rescue 1122.

The provincial government has also directed health authorities to complete inspections of electrical wiring, air-conditioning systems and electro-medical equipment within three days to identify potential sources of fire.

Rescue 1122, in coordination with health, housing and local government departments, will inspect existing hydrant points and install additional facilities where needed within seven days. The exercise will be supervised by the respective Commissioners.

The government has made monthly emergency mock drills mandatory at public-sector hospitals to improve staff preparedness and response during emergencies.

In another major step, the health secretaries and Infrastructure Development Authority of Punjab (IDAP) have been directed to submit a feasibility report within one week for installing technology-based fire alarm systems, smoke detectors and automated sprinklers in high-risk areas, including ICUs, neonatal nurseries and emergency wards.

A consolidated assessment report covering the province-wide safety situation will also be submitted to the Chief Minister by the Secretary Implementation and Coordination.
