Pakistan Day: Spirit High, Celebrations Modest Amid Oil Crisis

News Desk

Islamabad: Pakistan Day was celebrated across the country on Monday with traditional enthusiasm and patriotic fervour, though festivities remained subdued under government-imposed austerity measures due to the ongoing global oil crisis.

Observed annually on March 23, the day commemorates the historic Lahore Resolution, when the All India Muslim League formally demanded a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent—laying the foundation for the creation of Pakistan.

This year’s celebrations took place against the backdrop of rising global oil prices triggered by escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, prompting the government to adopt cost-cutting measures last week.

The day began with gun salutes in federal and provincial capitals, followed by flag-hoisting ceremonies and special events nationwide.

A key highlight was the change of guards ceremony at the Iqbal Shrine, where a contingent of the Pakistan Air Force took over ceremonial duties.

Alongside the celebrations, the nation renewed its commitment to the ideals of unity and solidarity envisioned in the Pakistan Resolution.

In separate messages, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation and emphasised unity as the cornerstone of progress.

President Zardari highlighted that Pakistan has achieved significant milestones since independence, including strengthening institutions, attaining nuclear capability, and combating terrorism.

He also referenced ongoing security efforts such as Operation ‘Bunyan Umm Marsus’ and Operation Ghadb-ul-Haq, reaffirming the resolve to eliminate terrorism.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described March 23 as a historic turning point that united Muslims under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, paving the way for Pakistan’s creation. He noted that despite economic challenges, the country continues to move towards stability.

The premier also praised the professionalism of the armed forces and stressed the importance of diplomacy in ensuring regional and global peace.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) termed March 23, 1940, a defining moment in the struggle for independence and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to national security, democratic stability, and public welfare.

The military leadership reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard national sovereignty, eliminate terrorism, and promote peace.

Amid ongoing challenges including terrorism and regional tensions, Pakistan Day served not only as a reminder of the country’s historic journey but also as a renewed call for unity, resilience, and national resolve for the future.
