PSL Leads Where It Matters, IPL Where It Pays: Global Report
News Desk
Islamabad: A new global report has reignited debate in the cricketing world, revealing a striking contrast between the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL): while the IPL continues to dominate financially, the PSL has emerged as a stronger league in terms of players’ rights, transparency, and governance.
According to the latest assessment by the World Cricketers’ Association, the IPL ranks third globally with 62.6 points, while the PSL stands fifth with 48 points.
However, the report underscores that this gap is largely driven by the heavy 45% weighting given to player salaries.
The numbers highlight IPL’s financial muscle, with players earning an average weekly income of $59,041—the highest in the world—compared to $16,579 in the PSL.
Yet beyond salaries, the PSL tells a different story.
The report finds that revenue distribution in the PSL is significantly more balanced. Players in the PSL receive around 36.8% of world-class revenue, compared to just 22% in the IPL.
In terms of overall league revenue share, PSL players take home approximately 32%, far ahead of IPL players, who receive only 8%—suggesting that despite higher earnings, IPL players get a smaller slice of the pie.
Governance and transparency further tilt the balance in PSL’s favour. The league’s dispute resolution system has been described as independent and transparent, whereas the IPL largely relies on internal mechanisms, raising concerns about potential bias.

Contract structures also differ sharply. The PSL offers more balanced agreements with fewer unilateral clauses, while certain IPL contracts grant greater powers to organisers.
Additionally, the PSL scores higher in areas such as players’ commercial rights, collective representation, and security review—indicating a stronger commitment to safeguarding player interests.
Experts say the findings expose a flaw in global ranking systems, which tend to prioritise financial metrics over critical factors like fairness, governance, and player welfare.
