Government hikes high-octane fuel levy to Rs300 per litre

News Desk

Islamabad: The government has significantly increased the levy on high-octane fuel, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approving a Rs200 per litre hike, raising the total levy to Rs300 per litre.

The decision was taken during a virtual meeting chaired by the premier on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The move comes after the prime minister took notice of the previously imposed Rs100 per litre levy and directed authorities to revise it upward.

Officials said the increase applies exclusively to high-octane fuel typically used in luxury vehicles, while prices for petrol and diesel used by ordinary and mid-range vehicles remain unchanged.

The government expects the revised levy to generate approximately Rs9 billion in monthly savings. Prime Minister Shehbaz directed that these funds be utilised to provide relief to the general public.

The statement also clarified that the measure would not impact fares for public transport or airlines, adding that it is designed to place a greater financial burden on wealthier segments of society while easing pressure on the broader economy.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, along with other senior officials.

The development comes just days after the government decided to keep petrol and diesel prices unchanged, following a sharp 20% increase earlier this month amid global oil supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.
