Inquiry Launched After Surgery on HIV-Positive Patient

Multan: An inquiry committee has been formed at Nishtar Hospital Multan after an emergency surgery was conducted on a patient later confirmed to be HIV positive, hospital officials said.

According to sources within the hospital, the patient was brought in a critical condition and required urgent surgical intervention. Doctors proceeded with the procedure in the general surgery operation theatre before the patient’s HIV test report was available.

Medical staff said the surgery was performed as the last case of the day due to the urgency of the patient’s condition. However, the report received after the operation confirmed that the patient was HIV positive.

Following confirmation of the report, the surgery department reportedly informed the hospital administration the next day. In response, the administration initiated precautionary disinfection measures, including sterilization of operation theatres and medical equipment to ensure safety protocols.

Medical Superintendent (MS) Nishtar Hospital Dr Rao Amjad has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether proper infection control procedures were followed and why the patient’s status was not known prior to surgery.
