Imran Khan Undergoes 4th Eye Injection as Treatment Continues
News Desk
Islamabad: Imran Khan’s ongoing eye treatment has entered a critical follow-up phase, with doctors administering a fourth intravitreal injection at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Tuesday, underscoring both medical progress and the seriousness of his condition.
Hospital officials confirmed that Khan, currently held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, was shifted to PIMS for the scheduled procedure. Prior to the injection, ophthalmologists conducted a detailed assessment, including an Optical Coherence Tomography scan, which indicated signs of clinical improvement.
He remained stable throughout the day-care surgery, which was carried out under strict monitoring and standard medical protocols.
The treatment is part of an ongoing response to his diagnosis of Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), a condition that occurs when the main vein responsible for draining blood from the retina becomes blocked.
Medical experts often associate CRVO with underlying cardiovascular risks such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.
According to reports submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan by his lawyer Salman Safdar, Khan has experienced severe vision impairment, including the loss of up to 85% of sight in his right eye.
His condition has consequently become a focal point in the ongoing political and legal tensions between the government and the opposition, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
This latest procedure follows earlier treatments, including a third injection administered on March 23 after a comprehensive medical evaluation.
Days before that, on March 18, a five-member medical board conducted a check-up at Adiala Jail on directives from the Islamabad High Court.
Khan, 73, has been in custody since August 2023 following multiple convictions, which he and his party maintain are politically motivated.
While some of these convictions have been suspended or overturned, several legal challenges remain pending as his health continues to draw public and judicial attention.
