Washington: Washington Freedom produced one of the most remarkable batting displays in T20 history, chasing down a mammoth 266-run target to defeat defending champions MI New York by six wickets in the Eliminator of Major League Cricket 2026.

The record-breaking chase at the Oakland Coliseum was powered by a stunning partnership between Andries Gous and Steve Smith, who combined for an unbeaten assault that turned an almost impossible target into a comfortable victory.

Gous smashed 132 runs while Smith remained unbeaten on 110, as the pair added 241 runs from just 89 deliveries, the second-highest partnership in T20 history and the biggest for any wicket in domestic or franchise cricket, surpassing the previous record held by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in 2016.

Freedom reached 270 for four with eight balls remaining, eliminating the defending champions in a match that also witnessed the most sixes ever hit in a T20 game, with both teams combining for 51 maximums.

Pooran’s Power Show Goes in Vain

Earlier, MI New York appeared to have sealed the contest after posting a huge 266 for nine. Nicholas Pooran led the charge with a breathtaking 106, narrowly missing the record for the fastest T20 century, while Kieron Pollard contributed 64 and Quinton de Kock scored 51.

Ravindra Sparks Stunning Turnaround

The turning point came through Rachin Ravindra, who delivered a match-winning spell at a crucial moment. The left-arm spinner claimed four wickets for 29 runs, becoming the only bowler able to slow down MI New York’s explosive batting lineup.

After Smith introduced Ravindra into the attack, the spinner removed Tajinder Dhillon, Shakib Al Hasan, Romario Shepherd and Kunwarjeet Singh, helping restrict MI New York to just 33 runs in their final five overs.

Gous and Smith Take Over

Freedom’s chase began disastrously at 10 for two, but Gous and Smith responded with remarkable composure. Despite the enormous required rate, the duo attacked relentlessly, capitalising on missed opportunities as MI New York dropped crucial catches.

Gous smashed Romario Shepherd for four consecutive sixes in a 29-run over, while Smith continued his aggressive approach, producing the fastest T20 century of his career.

Both batters reached their centuries from 40 deliveries, with Gous becoming the first American player to score a century in MLC history.

For Smith, the innings strengthened his ambitions of representing Australia at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, showcasing his ability to dominate in the shortest format.

With one of the greatest chases in T20 history, Washington Freedom not only knocked out the defending champions but also delivered a reminder that in modern cricket, even a target of 266 is no longer beyond reach.
