iPhone 18 Pro: Apple Takes Camera, Battery & AI to Next Level

Cupertino, California: Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing significant upgrades to the camera, video recording, performance, battery life and artificial intelligence.
With a new variable-aperture camera, the A20 Pro chip, enhanced video tools, a redesigned Dynamic Island and deeper AI integration, Apple is positioning its latest Pro models as its most capable iPhones yet.
But among the headline upgrades, the camera system stands out as one of the biggest changes.
A Camera Built for Greater Creative Control
For the first time, Apple has brought variable aperture to the iPhone’s main camera.
The new 48MP Fusion Main camera uses six laser-cut blades to adjust the aperture according to lighting conditions and the desired depth of field. Users can also manually choose from four aperture settings through the Camera app.
The technology gives photographers greater control over how much of a scene remains in focus, bringing the iPhone closer to the flexibility traditionally associated with dedicated cameras.
Apple says the upgraded sensor also improves low-light performance and produces sharper details, including in group photographs.
The computational photography system has been enhanced as well, while updated Photographic Styles introduce additional texture and grain controls. Users can therefore create a more customized look instead of relying solely on automatic image processing.
iPhone 18 Pro Targets Video Creators
Apple has also expanded the Pro models’ video capabilities.
Cinematic effects can now be applied after recording videos at up to 60 frames per second. Time-lapse recording also receives an upgrade, with support for 4K resolution and Dolby Vision HDR.
The Audio Mix feature has been improved with new algorithms designed to deliver clearer voices and better separation of music and other audio.
For more advanced users, new Pro controls provide direct access to settings including aperture, shutter speed and white balance. A built-in histogram can also help users monitor exposure while shooting.
Apple is additionally providing developers with APIs that could allow third-party camera apps to access the new aperture controls.
Can Your iPhone Help Verify a Photo?
Apple is introducing another notable feature called Apple Reference Image, designed to address concerns surrounding manipulated and AI-generated photographs.
The company says the new Main camera sensor can sign the pixels it captures. When Reference mode is activated, this signed sensor information is processed through Private Cloud Compute to create an unalterable reference image.
The reference image can then be viewed alongside the original photograph in the Photos app, allowing users to compare the two and identify potential changes.
The technology could prove particularly useful for photographers and photojournalists who need greater confidence in the authenticity of visual material.
Apple is also preparing support for the SynthID standard, while image metadata can provide additional clues about whether a photograph has been created or modified using AI.
Dynamic Island Gets a New Look
The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned.
Apple says the updated version is smaller while creating more room for useful information. It can display up to three Live Activities at the same time and continues to support Face ID for secure unlocking and authentication.
A20 Pro Brings More Sustained Power
Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro models are powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and a next-generation vapor chamber.
The combination is designed to keep the devices running at high performance for longer periods, with Apple describing it as the highest sustained performance ever delivered by an iPhone.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max also receives a major battery upgrade. Apple says it offers the biggest increase in battery life in iPhone history, helped by improvements to Apple silicon and a larger battery.
AI Becomes More Central to the iPhone
The new Pro models will run iOS 27 and include Apple Intelligence and upgraded Siri AI capabilities.
Apple is placing greater emphasis on personal context, aiming to make the iPhone more responsive to users’ needs while keeping privacy and security at the center of the experience.
The move reflects Apple’s broader effort to make AI an integrated part of everyday smartphone use rather than simply another standalone feature.
Four Finishes
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available in four finishes: black, silver, glacier and the new burgundy option.
Pre-orders are scheduled to open on September 12, with availability beginning September 18.
