US Admits Deploying Weapon in Space Orbit for First Time

Washington: The United States (US) has publicly acknowledged, for the first time, that it has deployed a weapon into Earth’s orbit, marking a significant development in the growing militarisation of space.
US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said Washington was prepared to respond to evolving threats and described the orbital weapon as necessary to protect American forces from potential hostile actions by adversaries.
However, Meink did not disclose details about the weapon’s capabilities or specify when it was placed into orbit.
The US announcement has drawn criticism from China, which has opposed the deployment of weapons in space and called on Washington to halt the expansion of its military capabilities beyond Earth.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Beijing supports the peaceful use and preservation of outer space and urged the United States to refrain from expanding its military presence in the space domain.
China also called on Washington to take concrete steps to safeguard global strategic stability and prevent an arms race in space.
The development comes amid growing competition among major powers to strengthen military and technological capabilities in space, raising renewed concerns over the future of space security and strategic stability.
However, Meink did not disclose details about the weapon’s capabilities or specify when it was placed into orbit.
