Abbottabad on Alert for Rain, Strong Winds from May 18

Islamabad: The district administration in Abbottabad has issued a weather alert for May 18 to 23, warning residents of possible heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, dust storms and strong winds across different parts of the district.

According to the advisory issued on Friday, all relevant departments, including Rescue 1122, WASA, TMAs, Local Government authorities and Cantonment Boards, have been directed to remain on high alert and complete precautionary arrangements to respond to any emergency situation caused by adverse weather conditions.

Residents have been advised to take precautionary measures and immediately contact emergency services in case of any untoward incident. The district administration also shared emergency contact numbers for the District Control Room, Rescue 1122 and the District Police Control Room to ensure rapid public assistance during severe weather conditions.

The warning comes as local authorities intensify preparations ahead of the upcoming monsoon and summer season.

A day earlier, Deputy Commissioner Sarmad Saleem Akram chaired a high-level meeting on Monsoon and Summer Hazard Contingency Planning 2026 to review the district’s preparedness strategy.

Officials from district, provincial and federal departments attended the meeting, including representatives from Rescue 1122, Health, Police, Public Health Engineering, Irrigation, WAPDA, National Highway Authority, Tourism and WASA.

During the meeting, the deputy commissioner directed departments to ensure immediate cleaning of drains and identified choke points before the start of the monsoon season. Authorities were also instructed to restore right of way and remove encroachments to minimize risks of urban flooding and traffic disruptions.

The administration further emphasized strengthening emergency response systems, improving healthcare readiness, ensuring flood relief preparedness and maintaining rapid response capabilities for landslides and other weather-related emergencies.

With an expected rise in tourist arrivals during the summer and monsoon season, officials were also directed to improve traffic management, parking arrangements and public service delivery across the district to avoid congestion and inconvenience during periods of heavy rainfall.
