Rawalpindi: An alleged robber was killed in a police encounter in Rawalpindi after two armed suspects riding a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on a police team in the jurisdiction of New Town Police Station.
According to police officials, the incident occurred when police personnel signaled the suspects to stop during routine checking. Instead of complying, the suspects allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the police party, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the encounter, one suspect was killed on the spot, while his accomplice managed to escape from the scene. Police identified the deceased suspect as Shah Rukh.
Authorities said weapons and a motorcycle were recovered from his possession.
Police further claimed that the killed suspect was involved in several serious criminal cases, including the murder of a citizen during a robbery incident in the New Town area two days earlier. He was also allegedly linked to another robbery case in the jurisdiction of Banni Police Station in which a citizen was injured after resisting the robbers.
During the exchange of fire, Constable Zain Ali was struck by a bullet but remained unharmed because he was wearing a bulletproof jacket, police said.
Senior police officials, along with additional personnel, reached the scene shortly after the incident, while a search operation was launched to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect.
City Police Officer Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani praised the police team, including officials from SP Rawal and New Town Police Station, for confronting the armed suspects despite heavy firing.
“The attackers targeting citizens, their property and police personnel cannot escape the grip of the law,” the CPO said in a statement.
