Heavy Rains, Rising Temperatures Trigger GLOF Alert in KP

Islamabad: A high alert has been issued across the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid growing concerns over potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), as weather conditions raise the risk of sudden disasters in mountainous regions.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned that a combination of rising temperatures and an incoming spell of rain and storms could trigger glacier lake eruptions, leading to flash floods in vulnerable areas.
According to the PDMA, a new wave of westerly winds is expected to enter the province starting May 3, bringing heavy rainfall to districts including Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan.
These conditions significantly increase the likelihood of glacial lakes overflowing or bursting, which can result in rapid and destructive flooding downstream.
Authorities have cautioned that such flash floods pose serious threats to low-lying communities, with fast-moving water capable of sweeping away vehicles and damaging infrastructure, particularly along rivers and canals.
In response, the PDMA has directed district administrations to implement emergency preparedness measures, enhance monitoring in high-risk zones, and ensure that rescue teams and machinery are on standby.
Relevant agencies have also been instructed to keep early warning systems fully operational to enable swift responses in case of any emergency.
Residents and travelers have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary movement, particularly towards high-risk and mountainous areas, until the weather conditions stabilize.
Very Hot, Dry Weather Forecast for Sindh
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Sunday forecast very hot and dry weather across most districts of Sindh over the next 24 hours.
However, dust-raising winds and occasional strong gusts are expected in central and southern parts of the province during the afternoon.
Overall, very hot and dry conditions are likely to persist throughout Sindh during the forecast period.
