Attock: What began as an ordinary evening for a railway employee in Attock turned into a fatal act of courage when 44-year-old Muhammad Liaquat Ali confronted an alleged suicide bomber and lost his life while trying to prevent an attack near a sensitive security installation.
Liaquat Ali, a gang mate in Pakistan Railways, had reportedly returned home after completing his duty in the Jund-Kohat railway section when he noticed a suspicious man moving near the Khushalgarh bridge towards the sensitive Mankor check post.
According to local residents and officials, Liaquat intercepted the suspect, questioned his presence and attempted to stop him from advancing further. During the confrontation, the alleged bomber detonated himself, triggering a powerful explosion that shook the surrounding area.
Witnesses said smoke and debris spread across the site moments after the blast, causing panic among nearby residents who rushed out of their homes.
Security officials believe Liaquat Ali’s intervention prevented the attacker from reaching the check post and potentially saved multiple lives.
Residents described the railway worker’s actions as an extraordinary display of bravery and selflessness.
Liaquat Ali is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter.
His eldest son, 17, recently completed matriculation, while his younger children, a 13-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son, are still studying.
Speaking to the media, his brother Naveed Ali struggled to hold back tears as he recalled the final moments.
“I keep thinking that if I had arrived earlier, perhaps I could have saved him, but it was God’s will. He gave his life to protect others,” he said.
Family members said Liaquat had served Pakistan Railways for 17 years and was promoted to the rank of gang mate only eight months ago. Railways service also ran in the family, as his late father had previously worked in the department.
A large number of relatives, railway employees and local residents continued visiting the family home to offer condolences, while mourning gripped the area. His mother remains in severe shock following the tragedy.
Locals and colleagues have urged the government to formally recognise Muhammad Liaquat Ali’s sacrifice, calling him a national hero whose courage prevented a far greater disaster. Input from Dawn.
