Faisalabad: A serious case of medical negligence has surfaced at the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology, where surgical scissors were allegedly left inside the body of a 22-year-old patient during open-heart surgery, hospital officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Medical Superintendent Dr Nadeem, the patient, a resident of Toba Tek Singh, underwent heart surgery at the institute. However, weeks after the procedure, she began experiencing severe pain and complications.

Following medical examination, doctors discovered that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her body during the operation. The instrument was later removed through a second surgery conducted nearly three weeks after the initial procedure.

Dr Nadeem said an inquiry into the incident has been completed and found negligence on the part of the operation theatre staff.

“The staff nurses failed to count the surgical instruments after the operation, which led to the incident,” he said.

Hospital authorities have taken disciplinary action against two nurses allegedly responsible for the negligence. The medical superintendent said a letter has also been sent to the Punjab Health Secretary recommending withdrawal of their services.

The incident has raised serious concerns about patient safety and standard operating procedures at one of Punjab’s major cardiac healthcare facilities.
