Tariq Farooq Elected AJK Assembly Speaker

Muzaffarabad: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Tariq Farooq has been elected as the 15th Speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly, securing a clear majority in the house.
Farooq received 32 votes in the Speaker’s election, defeating Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Qasim Majeed, who secured 13 votes.
Following his election as Speaker, Farooq will also take over as the Acting President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, adding another key constitutional responsibility to his new parliamentary role.
The election marks another major step in the formation of the new AJK government following the recent general elections. The newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly took their oath on Monday after the completion of the process for reserved seats.
With the election of the Speaker now completed, the new assembly has moved further toward becoming fully operational and beginning its legislative proceedings.
