SC acquits man in child abduction case citing lack of evidence
The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on Tuesday acquitted an accused in a child abduction case, ruling that the prosecution had failed to provide sufficient evidence.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Hashim Khan Kakar heard the case involving Akhtar Hussain, who had been accused of kidnapping a three-year-old child and receiving ransom.
During proceedings, the prosecution claimed the accused had taken part in the abduction and that Rs300,000 was recovered from him out of a Rs950,000 ransom.
However, defense counsel Bushra Qamar argued there was no direct evidence, highlighting contradictions in witness statements and procedural flaws in the investigation.
The court was informed that two co-accused had already been acquitted. Justice Kakar also observed that terrorism charges in the case could be reconsidered.
After hearing arguments, the court ruled that the evidence was insufficient and ordered the acquittal of the accused.
SC upholds death sentence in triple murder case
The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of a man convicted of killing his wife and two in-laws, dismissing his appeal after finding strong evidence against him.
The case was heard by a bench led by Justice Hashim Khan Kakar. According to the prosecution, the convict, Sultan Ahmed, set his wife, mother-in-law and aunt-in-law on fire in 2022 in Rahim Yar Khan following a domestic dispute.
Witnesses, including individuals who sold petrol and a lighter to the accused, testified and later identified him, strengthening the prosecution’s case.
The defense argued that the deaths were accidental and occurred during cooking, but the court rejected this claim.
During the hearing, Justice Kakar remarked that there was no justification for killing one’s spouse and noted with concern the increasing trend of such violent incidents.
After reviewing the evidence, the apex court dismissed the appeal and upheld the death sentence awarded to the convict.
