Pakistani Celebrities Who Entered Politics
News Desk
Islamabad: In Pakistan, celebrity culture has traditionally revolved around three worlds: cricket, music, and television.
These industries produce the country’s biggest stars, people whose fame crosses generations and whose names become part of everyday conversations.
But there is another arena that has repeatedly attracted celebrities, one far more unpredictable and unforgiving than showbiz: politics.
For Pakistani celebrities, entering politics is often a high-risk gamble. Some manage to transform their popularity into political power, while others discover that public applause does not always translate into votes.
Over the decades, several actors, singers, anchors, and sports icons have stepped into the political field, hoping to shape the country beyond the stage, screen, or cricket ground.
Former PM Imran Khan
No celebrity-politician story in Pakistan is bigger than that of Imran Khan. Before becoming one of the country’s most influential political figures, he was already a global cricket superstar who led Pakistan to its historic 1992 World Cup victory. His philanthropic work through Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre further strengthened his public image.
When he launched Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in 1996, many dismissed it as another celebrity experiment. Decades later, however, Imran Khan became Prime Minister and reshaped Pakistan’s political narrative.
Despite legal troubles and political challenges today, he remains the country’s most dominant political figure, perhaps the biggest success story of a celebrity entering politics anywhere in the world.
Tariq Aziz
Long before celebrity politics became common, legendary television host Tariq Aziz also entered the political arena. Known for the iconic PTV show Neelam Ghar, Tariq Aziz carried immense public goodwill. Interestingly, he remains one of the few politicians to defeat Imran Khan in an election during the early years of Khan’s political journey.
Kaiser Khan Nizamani
The entertainment industry has also produced several actors who flirted with politics. Kaiser Khan Nizamani, along with his wife Fazila Qazi, has long been vocal about political and social issues.
Kaiser actively participated in the cultural wing of the Pakistan Peoples Party and even contested elections in 2018 before shifting focus back to acting.
Abrar ul Haq
Music stars, too, have found politics impossible to ignore. Abrar ul Haq, known for his energetic Punjabi music and philanthropy through Sahara Trust, became a prominent supporter of PTI. Though he later distanced himself from active politics, his political appearances once generated as much attention as his songs.
Jawad Ahmad
Similarly, Jawad Ahmad attempted to build an alternative political movement with his Barabari Party. While his political journey.never gained major electoral momentum, he continues to remain politically vocal and visible in public discourse.
Iqrar Ul Hassan
The newest entry into celebrity politics is Iqrar Ul Hassan, the longtime face of ARY News’ investigative show Sar e Aam. After more than two decades in journalism, he surprised many by announcing his retirement from media and launching his Awam Raj Party.
His transition highlights how public trust built through television can quickly become political capital, though sustaining it is another challenge altogether.
Azekah Daniel
Female celebrities have also tested the political waters. Actress Azekah Daniel officially joined PTI.
Atiqa Odho
Veteran actress Atiqa Odho once actively defended former military ruler Pervez Musharraf and his political vision on television.
Noor Bukhari
Former film star Noor Bukhari also surprised audiences by entering politics after leaving showbiz and adopting a more religious lifestyle. She submitted nomination papers on behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Istehkam during the recent elections.
Sajid Hasan
Actor Sajid Hasan likewise explored politics multiple times through different parties, though his political journey never matched his success on television.
In Pakistan, celebrity status can open the door to politics, but it cannot guarantee survival inside it. Fame may bring recognition, loyal fans, and media attention, but politics demands resilience, strategy, and public trust on a completely different level.
Some celebrities successfully reinvent themselves as political leaders, while others eventually return to the comfort of the industries that made them famous in the first place.
