Rawal Dam spillways opened as water level rises

Islamabad: Residents living along Korang Nullah have been advised to take precautionary measures as rising water levels at Rawal Dam prompted authorities to open the dam’s spillways, increasing the risk of stronger downstream flows.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the water level at Rawal Dam reached 1,751.40 feet, leading to the opening of the spillways from 6 am to noon on Wednesday.
The NDMA Media Wing said the release of additional water could increase flow in Korang Nullah and affect adjoining localities.
The authority urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid approaching or crossing the nullah, particularly if the water current becomes stronger.
People were also advised against using temporary bridges over the water channel during periods of increased flow, as sudden changes in water levels could pose a serious safety risk.
The NDMA asked residents in vulnerable areas to closely monitor the situation and follow safety instructions to prevent accidents as water discharge from the dam increases.
