Islamabad: Parliamentary Secretary for Health Nelson Azeem informed the National Assembly (NA) on Monday that a total of 84,421 HIV cases have been registered in Pakistan.

During the Question Hour, he said all diagnosed patients are receiving treatment in line with established medical protocols, with healthcare services available at hospitals nationwide.

He added that dialysis patients are being treated on separate machines to prevent cross-infection, while individuals diagnosed at any facility are provided proper and timely care.

Nelson Azeem noted that Punjab has reported the highest number of HIV cases, attributing it to a more robust system of monitoring, testing, and diagnosis. Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad follow in terms of reported cases.

He emphasized that while the government is ensuring treatment, prevention requires joint efforts from both the public and healthcare providers. Unsafe blood transfusions and unregulated medical practices were identified as major contributors to the spread of HIV.

The parliamentary secretary said awareness campaigns have been launched in hospitals and clinics, and among healthcare workers, while laboratories are being closely monitored to ensure proper blood screening.

He further stated that the focus remains on early diagnosis and timely treatment to improve patients’ quality of life.

Highlighting international support, he said initiatives are being carried out with the assistance of donor agencies and in accordance with guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), with regular audits conducted to ensure transparency and effectiveness.
