Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control on Wednesday took serious notice of a viral video controversy involving a woman identified as Anmol alias “Pinky” and sought detailed reports from the police chiefs of Punjab and Sindh.

The committee’s 26th meeting, chaired by Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz at Parliament House, discussed allegations linked to former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf after a controversial video clip surfaced on social media earlier this week.

Addressing the committee, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said the woman had mentioned his name while appearing in court during police custody, but another video later emerged in which she allegedly claimed she had been pressured into making the statement.

He termed the allegations an attempt to damage his reputation and urged lawmakers to introduce legislation against the spread of unverified videos online.

Briefing the committee, the Additional Inspector General of Police Sindh informed members that the accused had allegedly been involved in an online drug distribution network operating in Karachi since 2018, with 17 cases registered against her. He added that investigations had found no evidence linking Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to the case.

The police official also confirmed that action had been initiated against officers accused of mishandling the suspect during the investigation process.

Committee members, including Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, expressed concern over the growing use of social media for political manipulation and character assassination. They stressed the need for responsible media conduct and stronger legal safeguards against the circulation of unverified content.

The committee decided to seek written reports from the inspectors general of Punjab and Sindh regarding the circumstances surrounding the allegations and the viral video. It also recommended another meeting involving Cyber Crime authorities, the NCCIA and the ANF to review similar incidents reported in Hyderabad.

During the meeting, lawmakers also discussed excessive police checkpoints in Islamabad and called for greater reliance on intelligence-based policing to reduce inconvenience for citizens.

Several legislative proposals, including amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and Islamabad local government laws, were deferred or withdrawn, while the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was recommended for passage.

The committee further reviewed issues related to delays in CDA land compensation and allegations of FIA misconduct in Karachi, directing authorities to submit detailed inquiry reports.
