Islamabad: A major reshuffle in the federal cabinet is reportedly under consideration, with changes expected in several key ministries, including finance, interior, defense, and maritime affairs.
Proposals to merge certain ministries and reduce the overall size of the cabinet are also being discussed, according to sources.
Sources said consultations are underway among the top leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) regarding the anticipated changes in the cabinet structure and ministerial portfolios.
Among the proposals being considered, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar is likely to be assigned the finance ministry portfolio while retaining his position as deputy prime minister.
Sources further indicated that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is being considered a strong candidate for the foreign affairs ministry.
Meanwhile, the names of Rana Sanaullah and Azam Nazeer Tarar are reportedly under consideration for the interior ministry, although no final decision has yet been made.
In an effort to streamline governance and reduce the size of the cabinet, proposals to abolish or merge certain ministries and divisions are also under review.
According to sources, the government is considering limiting the total number of ministries and divisions to 32.
One proposal under discussion involves merging the Ministry of Maritime Affairs with the Ministry of Defence to improve administrative efficiency.
Sources also said that the removal of some ministers of state from less significant ministries is being considered as part of broader efforts to reduce the cabinet’s overall size.
Consultations on the proposed cabinet reshuffle and the reallocation of ministerial portfolios are ongoing. Final decisions are expected after the completion of high-level discussions, sources added.
