Buenos Aires: Viral videos showing the sea apparently disappearing from Argentina’s Atlantic coast have sparked concern and speculation on social media, with some users claiming that the ocean suddenly dried up or retreated several kilometres overnight.

Videos circulating on TikTok, YouTube and Facebook show large stretches of exposed seabed, with crowds of people walking across the newly exposed coastal area while large ships can be seen farther offshore.

But experts say the phenomenon was not the sudden disappearance of the Atlantic Ocean.

The unusual retreat of seawater was linked to a combination of strong tides and meteorological conditions. Extremely strong winds blowing from the coast towards the open sea pushed surface water away from the shoreline, causing the sea level to fall unusually far during a period of low tide.

As a result, parts of the seabed that are normally covered by water became temporarily exposed.

Why did the water move so far back?

Experts say several natural factors can contribute to an unusually large coastal retreat.

One of them is known as wind setdown, a phenomenon in which persistent offshore winds push surface water away from the coast and temporarily lower the local sea level.

Changes in atmospheric pressure can also influence sea levels. When these effects occur alongside naturally occurring tides, the retreat of seawater can appear far more dramatic than a normal low tide.

The exposed coastline can therefore create the impression that the sea has suddenly disappeared, particularly when viewed through viral videos and photographs.

Is it a sign of a tsunami?

The unusual sight has also prompted comparisons with tsunamis, as seawater can rapidly retreat from some coastlines before a tsunami reaches land.

However, experts stress that not every sudden retreat of seawater indicates a tsunami. Tides, winds, atmospheric pressure and the shape of the coastline can all produce significant but temporary changes in local sea levels.

In Argentina’s case, the retreat was a temporary natural phenomenon, with seawater returning to the coastline after several hours.

Social media claims fuel speculation

Despite the natural explanation, some social media users described the event as a warning of global destruction or even a sign of doomsday.

The viral claims, however, do not match the scientific explanation for the phenomenon.

The incident highlights how dramatic natural events can quickly generate misinformation online, particularly when videos are shared without information about the location, timing or weather conditions.

Rather than signalling the disappearance of the ocean or an impending global catastrophe, the unusual scene was the result of temporary changes in coastal sea levels caused by natural oceanic and atmospheric conditions.
