Iran-US Escalation Raises Fears of Gulf Environmental Disaster

Islamabad: The latest escalation between Iran and the United States is not only damaging military assets and threatening vital shipping routes but is also raising concerns about a potentially severe environmental crisis in the Persian Gulf.
According to US media reports, several American military aircraft were damaged when Iran launched a missile attack on Al-Sulti Air Base in Jordan on Wednesday morning.
Citing informed sources, a US broadcaster reported that around eight US F-15 fighter jets were damaged during the attack. The aircraft were subsequently restored to operational status.
An A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft, popularly known as the “Warthog”, was also reportedly hit. One A-10 sustained significant damage, including the loss of a wing, and was rendered inoperable.
The attack also placed pressure on the US air-defence system. More than 30 Patriot interceptor missiles were reportedly launched from the base to counter the incoming attacks, at a time when the United States is already facing concerns over limited Patriot missile stocks.
The strike was part of a broader wave of Iranian retaliation following US attacks on Iranian targets.
Washington announced on Tuesday that it had targeted five Iranian oil tankers, describing the action as a response to an Iranian attempt to attack a US naval vessel.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps subsequently claimed that it had targeted eight oil tankers, two warships and a US military base in Jordan.
Gulf shipping caught in the crossfire
The confrontation has increasingly moved beyond military installations, with oil tankers and commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz becoming part of the growing crisis.
The development has raised concerns not only about global energy supplies but also about the potential consequences for one of the world’s most environmentally sensitive marine regions.
Arab media reports said the United States had targeted five Iranian oil tankers, while three other Iranian tankers were reportedly targeted three days earlier. Iran, meanwhile, has claimed attacks on three oil tankers and other vessels linked to the United States in the Strait of Hormuz.
The growing number of incidents has left dozens of tankers waiting to navigate the strategic waterway.
As of September 7, around 42 oil tankers were reportedly waiting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, including 18 carrying oil. Together, the vessels have a reported capacity of around 1.76 million cubic metres, equivalent to roughly 11.1 million barrels of oil and petroleum products.
Any major strike that causes a large tanker to sink or suffer extensive damage could therefore result in millions of litres of petroleum products entering the sea.
From military confrontation to environmental threat
The environmental consequences are potentially far-reaching.
The Gulf is already a highly vulnerable marine ecosystem, surrounded by densely populated coastal areas and heavily dependent on the sea for fisheries, desalination and economic activity.
Recent incidents have intensified these concerns. The Caroline Bezengi has reportedly been leaking oil near Oman since June, while the Minoan Pioneer cargo vessel was targeted on August 3.
Arab media reports have also cited satellite imagery showing oil slicks near Qeshm and Sari islands.
Environmental experts warn that continued attacks on oil tankers could place additional pressure on coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds and other coastal ecosystems that are particularly vulnerable to petroleum contamination.
The region has experienced the consequences of a major oil spill before.
During the 1991 Gulf War, oil spills affected more than 770 kilometres of coastline, leaving a lasting impact on marine and coastal habitats.
A threat to fisheries and marine life
Oil contamination can damage fish populations, coral reefs and other marine organisms while disrupting fishing activities and threatening the livelihoods of communities dependent on the sea.
The risks extend beyond wildlife.
Around 65 million people across Gulf countries depend on desalinated seawater for drinking and other essential needs. Meanwhile, an estimated 15 million people live along Iran’s southern coastline.
A significant oil spill near a desalination facility could interfere with water-treatment operations. In a severe incident, contamination could force plants to temporarily reduce or halt operations until the polluted water is safely treated.
This makes an oil tanker attack more than a shipping or energy-security issue. It could become a direct threat to food supplies, drinking water and coastal livelihoods.
Pollution concerns were already rising
The latest incidents come against a backdrop of increasing oil pollution in the region.
Research cited by the University of South Florida reportedly found that oil spills in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in March were four times higher than during the same period the previous year.
With military tensions now extending to commercial vessels, environmental specialists fear that repeated attacks, damaged tankers and prolonged disruptions could turn isolated pollution incidents into a wider ecological disaster.
The Strait of Hormuz carries a substantial share of the world’s oil trade, making it one of the most strategically important maritime passages on the planet.
But the current crisis highlights another reality: any military confrontation in the waterway carries consequences that may remain long after the missiles stop flying.
For Gulf states, Iran’s southern coast and millions of people dependent on the region’s waters, the question is no longer simply whether the conflict will disrupt oil supplies.
It is whether the next strike could leave behind an environmental disaster that the Gulf may take decades to recover from.
