Professor Saqi Torture Case: Main Accused Gets Bail

Karachi:  The main accused in the alleged torture and unlawful detention of Karachi University professor Dr Arif Khan Saqi has secured interim pre-arrest bail, while police have arrested two more security guards in connection with the case.

The First Additional District and Sessions Judge Malir granted interim bail to Konin Shah Rashdi against a surety bond of Rs20,000.

The court directed Rashdi to appear before the investigating officer and join the investigation. He was also ordered to appear before the court on the date fixed for confirmation of his bail.

The accused’s bail documents have subsequently been provided to the investigating officer.

Meanwhile, police raided Sindh Green Restaurant and arrested two more security guards, identified as Gul Sher and Taj Muhammad. With their arrests, the number of people detained in connection with the case has risen to five.

Police said Rashdi had not been arrested and that efforts to apprehend him were continuing.

According to police, Professor Saqi was allegedly subjected to torture by Rashdi with the assistance of his security guards. Authorities launched an investigation after videos and details of the alleged incident emerged on social media.

The case has also triggered strong reactions among the University of Karachi’s teaching community.

The Karachi University Teachers’ Association condemned what it described as the alleged brutal torture and unlawful detention of Professor Dr Arif Khan Saqi and called for strict legal action against all those responsible.

The association urged the government and relevant institutions to ensure the safety and protection of teachers and take action against those involved in accordance with the law.
