High Stakes Diplomacy: Pakistan Bridges US-Iran Divide

News Desk

Islamabad: Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire between Iran and the United States, calling the initiative timely and constructive.

In a statement shared on social media, the Malaysian premier praised Shehbaz Sharif and other regional leaders for stepping forward to ease tensions.

He said Pakistan’s offer to host negotiations reflects its strong diplomatic position and ties with all relevant parties.

Anwar Ibrahim stressed that any talks should aim for a lasting resolution rather than short-term ceasefire arrangements, noting that the region requires a sustainable peace framework beyond temporary agreements.

He also reaffirmed Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty under international law.

Meanwhile, diplomatic activity has intensified as efforts continue to de-escalate the situation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Mohammed bin Salman, briefing him on Pakistan’s outreach and emphasizing the urgent need for an immediate end to hostilities for regional stability.

During the call, Sharif also condemned recent attacks on Saudi Arabia and reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Kingdom. The Saudi Crown Prince, in turn, appreciated Islamabad’s peace efforts.

Reports suggest Pakistan has also played a behind-the-scenes role in facilitating communication.

According to a British news agency citing senior Iranian sources, Islamabad has conveyed a proposal from Washington to Tehran, though details remain undisclosed. Potential venues for talks are still under consideration, with both Turkey and Pakistan being discussed as possible hosts.

However, tensions remain high on the military front. Shahram Irani warned that the Iranian Navy is closely monitoring the USS Abraham Lincoln. He cautioned that if US naval assets come within range of Iranian missiles, they could be targeted.

Iranian naval officials also claimed that the US fleet has adjusted its position following reports of cruise missile activity from Iran’s coastline, underscoring the fragile and volatile nature of the situation even as diplomatic efforts continue.
