Furqan Ahmed Death Mystery Reopens After a Year

Islamabad: A year-long effort by the father of former Assistant Commissioner Pattoki Furqan Ahmed to determine how his son died has led the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to order the exhumation and re-postmortem of his body.

Justice Shahrukh Arjumand directed the District Magistrate Islamabad to complete the process within 10 days and constitute a medical board to conduct the exhumation and fresh post-mortem.

According to the court judgment, Furqan Ahmed was found dead at a rest house in 2025 after participating in relief operations in flood-affected areas. However, nearly a year later, questions surrounding the circumstances and actual cause of his death remain unanswered.

The court noted that the deceased’s father had repeatedly approached government departments and submitted applications seeking information about his son’s death.

Observing that the father was seeking neither financial compensation nor any personal benefit, the IHC said his continued efforts to uncover the truth could not be dismissed as unnecessary insistence.

The court stressed that the passage of time could affect the availability of evidence, as material evidence may deteriorate or disappear after burial. It therefore held that administrative delays should not be allowed to undermine the pursuit of justice.

The IHC also set aside an order of the Additional District Magistrate Islamabad that had refused to allow a post-mortem.

Under the court’s directions, representatives of the relevant authorities, the deceased’s father or his representative, and the Investigation Officer from Kasur will participate in the exhumation and re-postmortem proceedings.

The court has given the authorities 10 days to complete the process, potentially opening a new chapter in the investigation into Furqan Ahmed’s death.
