Cyclonic Storm ‘ASNA’ Drifts Westward Off Sindh Coast: PMD
News Desk
Karachi: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday reported that Cyclonic Storm “ASNA” over the northeast Arabian Sea off the Sindh coast has moved further westward over the past nine hours.
The storm is now located at latitude 23.6°N and longitude 65.7°E, approximately 200 km southwest of Karachi.
The system is expected to continue tracking west-south-westwards.
Under its influence, rain-thundershowers with heavy downpours and squally winds are predicted in most parts of Sindh, including Karachi, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Jamshoro, and Dadu.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) revealed on Wednesday that Cyclonic Storm BIPARJOY has moved northward during the past 12 hours and intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS).
In its third alert issued here, the PMD said that the severe Cyclone Storm (BIPARJOY) was now lying near Latitude 12.8 N and Longitude 66.1 E, about 1340km south of Karachi. Maximum sustained surface winds are 90-100 km/hour, gusting to 120 km/hour around the system centre.
Due to favourable environmental conditions (sea surface temperature of 30-32 degrees Celsius, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence), the system is likely to intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) this evening or night and continue to move in a north-northwest direction.
