Washington: A proposed agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at extending the ceasefire and launching negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program has reportedly been finalized and is awaiting final approval from US President Donald Trump, according to a US news website.

The report, published by Axios, said negotiators from both countries had agreed on a 60-day memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would extend the ceasefire and pave the way for formal discussions on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Senior US officials involved in the talks said the agreement had been largely finalized by Tuesday, but both Washington and Tehran required approval from their top leadership before signing the deal.

According to the report, Iranian negotiators later informed US mediators that they had secured the necessary approvals and were prepared to sign the agreement. However, Iran has not officially confirmed the claim.

US negotiators reportedly briefed President Donald Trump on the details of the proposed deal, but the president did not immediately approve it. A US official quoted in the report said Trump informed mediators that he needed several days to review the agreement before making a final decision.

If approved, the 60-day agreement would mark the most significant diplomatic breakthrough between the two countries since the conflict began and could open the door for broader negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

According to US officials, the proposed memorandum includes guarantees for unhindered commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran would also be required to remove all mines from the strategic waterway within 30 days.

The report added that the US naval blockade would be lifted gradually in proportion to the restoration of commercial maritime traffic in the region.

Officials said the agreement also includes Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. During the 60-day negotiation period, both sides are expected to discuss key issues including Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and the future of uranium enrichment activities.

The United States is also expected to discuss possible sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets as part of the negotiations. In addition, the proposed framework includes mechanisms to facilitate humanitarian assistance and essential goods for Iran.

According to US officials cited in the report, the agreement could provide Iran with an opportunity to stabilize and improve its economy, although the success of the process would depend on progress made during the upcoming negotiations.

The report denied the existence of any secret clauses or side agreements, while US officials maintained that broader concessions could help accelerate diplomatic progress between the two sides.
