London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing intensifying pressure over his future as Labour leader, with reports suggesting he could announce plans to step down amid growing unrest within his party.

According to The Observer, Starmer was expected to discuss a timetable for his departure as senior Labour figures increasingly question his ability to lead the party into the next election. The report said he was consulting with family and close allies before making a final decision.

The speculation follows a significant political setback for Starmer after Labour rival Andy Burnham secured a parliamentary seat, strengthening his position as a potential challenger for the party leadership.

While Downing Street dismissed suggestions of an imminent resignation, government sources said the prime minister remained focused on governing and had previously stated his intention to fight any attempt to remove him.

Starmer’s authority has been weakened by months of declining public support, policy reversals, and a series of controversies that have frustrated voters who backed Labour’s landslide election victory in 2024.

Critics within the party argue that the government has struggled to deliver meaningful improvements in living standards and public services.

More than 100 Labour lawmakers have publicly called on Starmer to step aside or provide a clear succession plan, highlighting the scale of dissatisfaction within the governing party.

Attention has increasingly turned to Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, who is widely viewed as the leading contender to replace Starmer. Burnham’s recent parliamentary victory has strengthened his standing among Labour members seeking a change in leadership.

Although Burnham has not formally launched a challenge, his allies have urged Starmer to facilitate an orderly transition of power. Former health secretary Wes Streeting has also indicated he would be prepared to enter a leadership contest if one takes place.

A change in leadership would mark another chapter in Britain’s recent political instability, potentially making Starmer the latest in a series of prime ministers to leave office amid growing public frustration over economic pressures, public service challenges, and immigration concerns.
