Washington: A sudden burst of gunfire outside the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner triggered panic and a rapid evacuation late Saturday, raising fresh questions about security at one of the capital’s highest-profile gatherings.

According to officials, a suspect approached a security checkpoint near the venue and opened fire on law enforcement personnel. A member of the United States Secret Service was struck but avoided serious injury thanks to protective gear.

The individual is reported to be in stable condition.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly escorted out of the ballroom as agents moved to secure the area. Witnesses described a scene of confusion inside the packed hall, with attendees ducking for cover as security teams shouted instructions and shielded senior officials.

Authorities said the suspect, believed to be acting alone, was quickly apprehended. Federal investigators are now examining the individual’s background, including a search operation at a residence in California. Officials have not yet disclosed a motive.

The incident prompted the immediate cancellation of the dinner, which typically draws journalists, political leaders, and public figures from across the country. More than 2,000 guests were reportedly in attendance at the time.

Security analysts note that while the response appears to have been swift, the breach highlights ongoing challenges in protecting large, high-visibility events in Washington.

The location itself carries historical weight: the Washington Hilton was also the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

The disruption also comes amid a broader pattern of threats targeting Trump in recent years, including multiple assassination attempts during the 2024 election cycle.

While none of the officials at Saturday’s event were harmed, the episode is likely to intensify debate over protective protocols and risk assessment for public events involving senior leadership.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
