Sarfaraz Khan’s IPL return overshadowed by bat controversy

Guwahati: What was meant to be a comeback moment for Sarfaraz Khan turned into an unusual controversy as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a shaky start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals.
CSK’s innings unraveled early, losing three wickets inside the opening four minutes to slump to 19/3. Amid the early collapse, Sarfaraz walked in at 3.2 overs — marking his return to the IPL after a two-year absence — but was immediately stopped by the on-field umpire for using a non-compliant bat.
Under updated 2025 IPL equipment regulations, bats must adhere to strict limits on edge thickness, depth and width. Sarfaraz was briefly held back until the issue was addressed, creating an unusual delay before he could face his first delivery.
Comeback after long absence
Sarfaraz’s return carried significance. He last featured regularly in the IPL after debuting in 2015 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru but struggled for consistent opportunities in subsequent seasons. He did not play in the 2024 and 2025 editions.

A strong domestic run forced selectors to take notice. In the 2025/26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he amassed 329 runs in seven matches at a strike rate exceeding 200, including a century and three half-centuries.
CSK picked him up for his base price of INR 75 lakh, aiming to reinforce a middle order that had shown signs of fragility.
Brief impact amid batting collapse
Once allowed to bat, Sarfaraz attempted to stabilise the innings but could only manage 17 off 12 balls before being dismissed lbw. His short stay reflected CSK’s broader struggles, as the side failed to recover from the early damage.
The top order never found rhythm against Rajasthan’s pace attack, and the scoreline deteriorated to 70/6 at the halfway stage, leaving the lower order with a steep rebuilding task.
CSK’s problems were compounded even before the match began. Veteran captain MS Dhoni and key batter Dewald Brevis were both unavailable due to injuries, disrupting the team’s balance and experience.
