Washington: In a high-stakes diplomatic move, JD Vance has been tasked by Donald Trump to lead efforts aimed at transforming a fragile Iran ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement.

The 41-year-old vice president, who had previously maintained a low profile during the Middle East conflict, is set to travel to Pakistan this week. Talks are scheduled to begin Saturday in Islamabad, marking one of the most significant moments of his political career.

Despite being widely viewed as a leading contender for the 2028 US presidential election, Vance faces considerable challenges. Experts note that it is rare for a US vice president to take on such a central role in formal international negotiations.

Aaron Wolf Mannes, a lecturer at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, described the assignment as “high risk, high reward.”

Vance built his political reputation as a strong opponent of foreign military interventions, shaped in part by his service as a US Marine in Iraq.

This stance placed him in a delicate position after President Trump initiated military action against Iran on February 28. While Vance publicly supported the administration’s position, he largely stayed out of the spotlight.

Reports indicate that behind closed doors prior to the conflict, Vance had cautioned against military action, warning it could destabilize the region and fracture Trump’s political base. Nevertheless, he now finds himself playing a leading diplomatic role.

Speaking to reporters, Vance described his involvement so far as heavily centered on communication, saying he spent significant time handling calls and coordinating efforts. The White House has emphasized that he played a “key role” in developments from the outset.

Vance will be joined in Islamabad by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as part of a broader diplomatic team that includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio. His visit marks the first by a US vice president to Pakistan since Joe Biden in 2011.

US officials have expressed optimism that negotiations could lead to a durable peace in the Middle East. Some analysts suggest Iran may see Vance as a more credible negotiating partner due to his previously reported opposition to the war and his skepticism of interventionist policies.

In recent remarks, Vance struck a relatively conciliatory tone regarding tensions involving Iran and Lebanon, suggesting there may have been a “legitimate misunderstanding” over ceasefire terms. However, he has also shown a more confrontational side in the past, notably during a heated Oval Office exchange with Volodymyr Zelensky in early 2025.

The outcome of the Islamabad talks could have major political implications for Vance. His prominent role comes as speculation grows over a potential rivalry with Rubio for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.

Analysts note that a successful agreement could significantly boost his standing, while failure may raise questions about his leadership and diplomatic capabilities.
