NDMA Warns of Severe Landslide Risk in Northern Pakistan

Islamabad: Authorities have issued a high to very high landslide risk alert for mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from May 26 to 31 due to persistent rainfall, saturated soil conditions, and unstable mountain terrain.

According to the advisory, several major hotspot areas are at risk of landslides, debris flows, rockfalls, slope collapse, and temporary road blockages during the forecast period.

The most vulnerable locations include Shimshal Valley, areas surrounding Attabad Lake, Karimabad and nearby slopes, Disthang, Wurshigum, mountain slopes above Shishkat Bala, slopes northeast of Gulmit, the Shishkat Bala–Gulmit section, the Gulmit–Passu corridor, Hunza Valley, Nagar, Gilgit, Chilas, Tangir River sections, Banda-i-Hazir, Shatial Bazar, and sections of the Astore–Rattu road.

Other high-risk areas include Arang Kel, Kundol, Ushu, Kalam, Dalai Ridge, Allai, the Dasu–Pattan road section, and Chitral Valley.

The alert also identified several transport corridors as highly vulnerable, including Shigar Valley Road, Shigar–Skardu Road, Deosai Road, Jaglot–Skardu Road, Chilas Road, and parts of the Karakoram Highway.

Additional landslide-prone areas include Hussain Abad and Bundu Wazirpur in Shigar Valley, Deosai, Gamosh, Milpin, Yush, Mirak, Hanuchal, Sassi, Bunar, areas near Gunar Farm, Kappi Gali, and Zamanabad.

Authorities warned that the Karakoram Highway and regional mountain access roads could face temporary closures due to falling rocks, collapsing slopes, and debris accumulation.

Officials have advised local residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel on landslide-prone mountain roads and adjoining routes during the alert period.

Relevant departments have been directed to continuously monitor vulnerable slopes and road sections, while emergency response teams have been instructed to remain prepared for rapid deployment in case of any incident.

Authorities also emphasized the need for precautionary measures to ensure public safety and manage potential road blockages caused by severe weather conditions.
