Monkeypox: 25 Confirmed Mpox Cases, 9 Dead in Sindh

Karachi: Sindh is witnessing a concerning rise in monkeypox (mpox) cases, with health authorities confirming nine deaths so far, an alarming figure that underscores the seriousness of the outbreak.
According to the Sindh Health Department, a total of 122 suspected cases have been reported across the province. Of these, 25 have been laboratory-confirmed, indicating a growing but still partially unverified spread of the virus.
In the last 24 hours alone, two new confirmed cases have emerged—one each from Karachi and Khairpur, highlighting the continued transmission in both urban and semi-urban areas.
A closer look at the data reveals that Khairpur has become the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 18 confirmed cases.
Other affected areas include Sukkur with three cases and Karachi with four. Health officials are increasingly concerned about the geographic spread, particularly as cases appear to be emerging without clear travel histories.
This concern is amplified by the recent confirmation of a second mpox case in Karachi. At the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital, a 22-year-old man tested positive and was immediately shifted to isolation.

Hospital officials confirmed that the patient, a resident of the city’s Buffer Zone, had no recent travel history, raising fears of possible local transmission. The first case in Karachi had been reported just a month earlier, in March.
Meanwhile, vigilance remains high in the city’s healthcare facilities. At Jinnah Hospital, a suspected case involving a 28-year-old patient has been reported. Presenting with fever and characteristic skin rashes, the individual has been placed in isolation while samples have been sent for laboratory testing.
The patient, who belongs to Shah Latif Town, is being closely monitored as authorities await confirmation.
In response to the evolving situation, the Sindh Health Department has issued a renewed public advisory. Citizens and healthcare workers have been urged to strictly follow precautionary measures, seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear, and exercise particular care when handling newborns and vulnerable individuals.
While the number of confirmed cases remains relatively limited, the combination of fatalities, suspected infections, and signs of community-level transmission has placed the province on alert.
Health experts warn that early detection, responsible behavior, and adherence to safety protocols will be critical in preventing a wider outbreak.
