Islamabad: Security has been placed on high alert in Islamabad amid intensified diplomatic activity ahead of a likely second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran.

According to sources, comprehensive security arrangements have been finalized at all sensitive locations, including the Red Zone. Additional police personnel have been deployed, with reinforcements called in from across Punjab to ensure tight security across the federal capital.

Authorities have also imposed restrictions on movement, closing all major transport terminals in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi from 11:00 PM on Thursday.

However, officials stated that vehicles already en route to Rawalpindi will be allowed to proceed to their respective terminals after completing necessary procedures.

The heightened security comes as indications from the White House suggest that the next round of US-Iran negotiations is expected to take place in Islamabad. Reports of any extension to the existing ceasefire agreement have been dismissed.

Speaking at a press briefing, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that “constructive” discussions with Iran are ongoing and are likely to continue at the same venue where earlier talks were held.

She further clarified that the United States has not sought an extension of the current ceasefire, while emphasizing Pakistan’s pivotal role in the diplomatic process, describing it as the sole intermediary facilitating talks between Washington and Tehran.
