Mirpur: Earlier this week in Bradford, I had the privilege of visiting the Akab School for the Blind in Mirpur at the kind invitation of its visionary founder, Professor Ilyas Ayub.

The visit was made even more meaningful through the gracious facilitation of my dear friends, the celebrated author Yaqub Nizami, and Sajid Yusuf, Secretary General of the Pakistan Press Club UK and Editor of Kashmiri Post (Birmingham, UK).

From the moment of arrival, the warmth of the reception reflected the spirit of the institution itself. It was an inspiring experience that left a lasting impression.

Spread across an expansive 100-kanal campus, the Akab School for the Blind stands as a model of inclusive education, offering state-of-the-art academic and residential facilities.

Every part of the campus reflects thoughtful planning and a deep commitment to dignity, accessibility, and empowerment. It is not merely a school—it is a carefully built ecosystem designed to nurture potential and restore confidence.

What distinguishes the institution most profoundly is its leadership. Professor Ilyas Ayub, himself blind and a highly accomplished educationalist with three master’s degrees in English, Islamiat, and Special Education, is the driving force behind this transformative vision.

A recipient of the national honour Sitara-e-Imtiaz, he represents resilience translated into action. Under his guidance, the institution has become a space where students are not defined by their disability but by their possibilities.

For more than 25 years, the school has worked to challenge social stigma surrounding visual impairment. It provides high-quality, multidisciplinary education alongside practical skills training, enabling students to become independent, confident, and productive members of society.

The institution serves both male and female students, offering day schooling as well as well-maintained residential facilities.

The campus itself is fully equipped with academic blocks, hostels, sports grounds, and a mosque, creating a holistic environment for intellectual, physical, and spiritual development.

Beyond academics, the school has also built a strong reputation in sports, particularly cricket, earning international recognition and contributing skilled players to winning national-level teams.

One of the most striking aspects of the visit was the visible support from the diaspora, particularly from Bradford, reflected in the donor and sponsor network associated with the school. It was evident that contributions are being utilized with transparency, care, and a strong sense of accountability.

Akab School for the Blind is far more than an educational institution. It is a living statement of hope, inclusion, and human potential. It challenges deeply rooted assumptions about disability and reminds us that limitation is often not in ability, but in opportunity.

Here, opportunity is not a promise, it is a daily reality being created with purpose and dignity.
