Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast intermittent pre-monsoon rainfall across various parts of Pakistan until July 3, warning of flash floods, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides, and mudslides due to rising temperatures and expected rainfall.

According to the NDMA, the ongoing heatwave has accelerated glacier melting in northern Pakistan, increasing the risk of glacial lake bursts and sudden flooding. Monsoon rains are also expected between June 27 and July 3, 2026.

The authority warned that melting glaciers could cause a rapid rise in water levels in rivers and mountain streams across Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Tourists, travelers, and local residents have been advised to avoid rivers, streams, and glacial lake areas.

Residents of Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper and Lower Chitral, Swat, and adjoining areas have been urged to remain alert and monitor changing weather conditions.

The NDMA said local administrations have been placed on high alert in glacier-prone valleys and settlements. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers, streams, glacial lakes, and riverbanks.

Authorities have also instructed the public to immediately report any sudden rise in stream water levels, changes in water color, or unusual sounds coming from glaciers. Provincial Disaster Management Authorities have been directed to remain fully prepared for any emergency.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast the arrival of the monsoon season from July 1 in northeastern Pakistan, Punjab, and Azad Kashmir. Rainfall is expected in northern regions and northeastern Punjab from the beginning of July.
